How is a Hindustani Classical Music "Gharana" established?

It is indeed an interesting question. One often hears about musicians hailing from such and such "Gharana". What is a "Gharana" after all? And then one does tend to wonder what it would take, to establish an altogether new gharana of Indian Classical Music. Before dwelling on the "how to" one needs to take a step back and realize that if it really were that simple, then there would be gharanas sprouting from every nook and corner.

In my humble opinion, a new gharana can be establish if it meets the below criteria:

  1. First and foremost is that one must be an absolute master of his/her chosen form of Hindustani Classical Music (vocal or instrument). This usually takes anywhere between 40–50 years (assuming the learning began in childhood itself).
  2. This master should have contributed at least a few significant innovations (a different way of doing something OR a new addition to the existing repertoire).
  3. This innovation must then be practiced & perfected by at least two successive generations of the innovating artist’s family (from point 1).
  4. Gradually those innovations will start getting associated and recognized with the name of the founding artist OR another name that the founding artist may choose to assign to these innovations. Most importantly the audience must also recognize these innovations as part of the New Gharana.

By the time the third or fourth generation rolls in, they can proudly proclaim their lineage belonging to the newly formed gharana.
